Most hotel buyers walk into a linen conversation asking about thread count. And thread count matters for bed sheets. But ask any experienced housekeeping manager what really separates a good towel from a bad one, and they will not mention thread count at all.

They will talk about GSM.

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is the standard measurement of how much fabric is packed into every square metre of a textile. In simple terms, the higher the GSM, the heavier, denser, and more absorbent the fabric. The lower the GSM, the lighter, thinner, and quicker-drying it becomes.

And here is what makes it so important for hospitality. GSM cannot be inflated through multi-ply yarn tricks the way thread count can. What the label says is what you get, which makes it one of the most reliable quality indicators in hotel linen procurement.

Why GSM Is a Balancing Act

To begin with, here is the most crucial thing to know.

It is not good to have a very high GSM. But lower GSM does not necessarily mean lower or poorer quality. The selection of the right GSM is indeed a balancing act; if you choose low, your guests will know at once that you’re lacking in quality. Too high, and you will have higher laundry costs, longer drying cycles, and a difficult housekeeping team to deal with during peak laundry turnover due to the heavy and slow-drying towels.

Bath Towels Where GSM Matters Most

The 500 to 550 GSM window is the optimal range for contemporary hospitality as it provides that luxurious feel that guests desire without the drawbacks of extremely heavy sheets. The 500 GSM towel can reduce the drying time by 40% compared with 600+ GSM towel, which results in savings in the bills of utilities.

For majority of the 4/5 star hotels in India, UAE and UK, we always end up around 550 to 650 GSM. The quality is evident right away to guests. The washers are still essential to the laundry team as they’re able to get the job done in a timely fashion. They can last for 150 to 200 wash cycles in commercial washing machines before they need thinning.

An important note of caution, however. Some suppliers add starch or acrylic resin finishes to boost the GSM during manufacturing. Fabric weight is heavy and crisp out-of-the-box. The actual GSM decreases after 3-5 washes, when those finishes dissolve. Always test samples before approving bulk orders – not washed ones! 

Hand Towels and Face Towels

Hand towels and face towels get used more frequently than bath towels and washed more often too. A slightly lower GSM than your bath towel is perfectly appropriate and actually makes more operational sense.

• Hand towels — 400 to 550 GSM works well across most property types
• Face towels — 350 to 500 GSM is the typical range

What matters more than matching GSM exactly is matching the weave, colour, and cotton type. A coordinated bathroom set, even with slightly varying GSM across pieces, looks and feels more intentional than a mismatched set at identical GSM.

Pool Towels and Spa Linen

Pool towels are not as pampered as any other piece of linen in your hotel. They are dragged on sun loungers, used on wet pool decks, and constantly laundered in environments in which chlorine is used.

Durability and fast-dry fabrics are the main considerations for pool linen. Healthcare facilities should pay attention to 400 GSM linens, as they are lighter weights that enable fast turnaround and high-heat sanitisation cycles for clinical safety. The same applies to pools, which run several cycles of laundry each day.

Recommended GSM ranges: 

• Pool towels — 400 to 550 GSM
• Spa towels — 500 to 650 GSM
• Terry bath robes — 380 to 500 GSM
• Waffle bathrobes — 200 to 280 GSM 

The waffle robe is a special mention. The waffle weave retains air, making it warmer than terry, but not as heavy. They are becoming very popular in UAE resorts and UK spa hotels where patients change from treatment rooms to relaxing areas during the day. 

Bath Robes Comfort Meets Practicality

A bath robe sits at an interesting intersection. Guests wear it to relax so softness and warmth matter. But it also needs to be laundered daily at scale so weight and drying time matter too.

For 5-star hotels, a 500 GSM+ terry robe creates that unmistakable “hotel luxury” feeling guests write about online. For high-volume spa operations, a 250 GSM waffle robe is easier to launder, dries faster, and still feels elegant on the body.

Bed Linen GSM Works Differently Here

For bed sheets, pillow covers, and duvet covers, bed linen is typically compared more by weave and thread count than by GSM. But GSM still matters for certain bed linen products, particularly duvets, mattress protectors, and heavier woven items.

For hotels in warm climates like Rajasthan or the UAE, lighter sheet GSM keeps guests cool through the night. For UK properties in autumn and winter, slightly heavier sheet construction adds a subtle warmth that guests genuinely appreciate.

The Hidden Operational Cost of Getting GSM Wrong

This is the part most buyers only discover after the fact.

Heavier towels carry significant secondary expenses. The weight-to-wash ratio describes how much water a fabric retains; a 650+ GSM towel absorbs substantially more moisture than a 500 GSM version. Verified data indicates that using a 500 GSM towel can cut drying times by 40% compared to heavier alternatives, leading to a direct reduction in electricity and gas consumption. Beyond energy, labour efficiency takes a hit: heavier linens are more difficult for staff to fold and transport, which can slow down room turnover.

On the flip side, towels that are too light feel thin immediately. They are harder to fold neatly into that signature hotel roll. And because lower GSM fabrics have less fibre density, they fray and thin out faster under repeated industrial washing.

The right GSM is not the highest you can afford. It is the one that works best across the full cycle guest experience, laundry efficiency, and linen lifespan.
